Women bureaucrats and petty corruption. Experimental evidence from Ghana

More women in public institutions are correlated with lower levels of corruption. However, this relationship is thought to be context specific, and the mechanisms that underlie it remain unclear. We conduct two survey experiments investigate whether why end-users expect bureaucrats less corrupt Ghana. Our results show citizens do not likely solicit bribes than men. This result holds across different experience sector respondents who have paid a bribe. second experiment shows men distribute equal shares their salaries extended families. argue equality financial pressures explains bribe-taking rates may similar genders. cast doubt on idea will reduce petty corruption countries where pervasive.
